Alexander Gorodnitsky envisages this visit as a wonderful opportunity to meet up again with good friends. He will arrive in Wellington on Monday, 13th July. Born March 20, 1933, the son of office workers in Leningrad (which has regained its old name, St Peterburg), Alexander Gorodnitsky is a much-travelled poet, singer and scientist. In 1951 he finished sec ondary school ‘with excellence' and entered the Plekhanov Leningrad Institute of Mines, from which he graduated in 1957, majoring in geophysics. As a geologist/geophysicist, he has travelled to many exotic places in the world. He has specialised in studying the floors of all the world's great oceans, including those of the Arctic North and Antarctica. He has made some fascinating discoveries. As a scientist and professor, Alexander Gorodnitsky has published over 260 research works, including 8 monographs on the geology and geophysics of the ocean floor. The songs and poems by Gorodnitsky are always sincere and frank, free of false notes, revealing high professionalism and deep insight into life and history, exquisitely expressed. Alexander started writing poetry when still a schoolboy, his first poems being published as far back as 1948. His first songs evolved during an oceanographic expedition in 1953. For a long time his songs were distributed by Samizdat Records, and were widely performed by other singers. Unlike other bards, for several decades, Gorodnitsky composed and sang his songs a capella; later, he sang accompanied by a guitarist, but now sometimes he plays guitar himself. He tours in many cities of Russia, participates in festivals of authors' songs (called ‘bard' songs - traditional feature of Russian culture). Eight collections of his poetry have been published and many of his poems and songs are familiar to Russians from their schooldays. Site: gorodnitsky.com
